Various Types of Benign Tumors

Tumors form when body cells grow excessively and out of control. If the appearance does not attack the surrounding tissue or other organs, the tumor is classified as benign.

Even so, you can’t just ignore it. In some cases, tumors can become serious when they press against vital organ structures, such as blood vessels or nerves.

Before it’s too late to diagnose, identify the following types of benign tumors:

1. Adenomas

Adenomas are benign tumors that form in the epithelial tissue that functions to line glands, organs, and other structures in the body. Polyps in the intestine are the most common type of adenoma.

In addition, other benign adenoma tumors can also arise in the liver, adrenals, thyroid gland, and pituitary gland (under the brain).

Although rare, adenomas can develop into cancer (adenocarcinoma). Therefore, some conditions may require surgery and chemotherapy.

2. Lipomas

Lipomas are the most common type of benign tumor. These tumors invade the soft tissue consisting of fat cells.

This type of benign tumor rarely becomes cancerous. Therefore, generally the condition does not need to be treated, unless the tumor is growing rapidly or is painful.

This condition can affect people of all ages, but is more common in people between the ages of 40 and 60.

3. Nevi

Nevi or better known as moles are a mass growth on the skin. This type of benign tumor can look like small pink, brown, to black spots.

Moles are generally harmless, so there is no specific treatment for them.

However, be careful if there are changes in the shape, size, and color of the mole. Also be aware if the side is not firm/flat, feels itchy, and starts bleeding. Conditions like this can indicate melanoma skin cancer.

4. Fibroids

Fibroids are a type of benign tumor that invades connective tissue. These tumors can invade any organ in the body, but are more common in the lining of the uterus (uterine fibroids).

Although they do not have the potential to develop into cancer, uterine fibroids can cause heavy vaginal bleeding, bladder problems, fertility problems, and pelvic pain.

5. Hemangiomas

Hemangiomas sometimes appear as bright red birthmarks in babies aged 1-2 weeks. These tumors look like lumps made up of blood vessels in the skin.

They can appear on any part of the body, but are most common on the face, scalp, chest or back.

Treatment for infantile hemangioma (infants) are usually not needed as these tumors disappear with age. Even so, consider treating the condition if the hemangioma causes interference with vision, breathing, or other organ function.

6. Mioma

Myoma or uterine fibroids is a benign tumor that grows from smooth muscle. This muscle can be found in internal organs, such as the uterus and stomach.

Sufferers usually have symptoms in the form of excessive menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain, and frequent urination. Even so, myoma almost never develop into cancer.

This type of benign tumor is often found in women over the age of 35. Unfortunately, the symptoms are difficult to detect with the naked eye.

7. Meningioma

Meningioma is a tumor that originates from the meninges, which are the layers or membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord.

Most meningiomas grow very slowly, even for years without causing symptoms. This carries the risk of serious disability due to its effect on adjacent brain tissue, nerves or blood vessels.

The treatment given varies, depending on the location and symptoms. But in general, the treatment of meningioma is in the form of chemotherapy and surgery.

8. Neuromas

Neuromas are a type of benign tumor that grows from nerves. There are two types of nerve tumors, namely neurofibromas and schwannomas.

Neurofibromas are most common in people with an inherited condition called neurofibromatosis. Treatment for this condition is usually in the form of surgery.

9. Papillomas

Papillomas occur when tumors grow from epithelial tissue. Shaped like a finger and can grow on the skin, breast ducts, cervix, and mucous membranes that cover the inside of the eyelids (conjunctiva).

This type of benign tumor can develop into cancer. Although it can heal on its own without treatment, some cases require surgery.

10. Osteochondroma

Osteochondroma is a type of bone tumor that is benign. This condition usually causes a lump and pain near a joint, such as a knee or shoulder.

Most of the time, doctors will only look at benign tumors on x-rays. Surgery may be needed if the tumor is causing symptoms of pain or pressure on nerves or blood vessels.

Symptoms of Benign Tumors

Tumors do not always cause symptoms, whether they are malignant or benign. The appearance of symptoms usually depends on the location of the tumor and whether the tumor has affected important organs or the senses.

However, in general, some of the symptoms of benign tumors that can appear include:

• Discomfort or pain.
• shivers.
• Fatigue.
• Fever.
• Night sweats.
• Decreased appetite.
• Weight loss for no apparent reason.

It is important to know, this condition can be easily detected if it is close to the skin. Even so, tumor lumps don’t always trigger pain or discomfort.
