Often Thirsty at Night? Check the Various Causes Here

Common Causes of Frequent Thirst at Night

Often feeling thirsty at night can be caused by a lack of body fluids. Usually, this condition is caused by the body not getting enough fluid intake.

If you don’t have time to drink water before bed, you may become thirsty in the middle of the night, causing you to wake up to drink.

In addition, if the air temperature in the room is relatively warm, the body will sweat a lot and eventually affect the amount of body fluids that come out. The more body fluids that come out, the more likely it is to experience the sensation of thirst during sleep at night.

The habit of consuming spicy food or salty food will also trigger a disturbance in the balance of fluids in the body. This of course will have an impact on the sensation of thirst and dry throat at night, especially if you consume it too close to bedtime.

Diseases that Cause Frequent Thirst at Night

If you often feel thirsty at night and wake you up, it could be related to a more serious health problem.

Here are some causes of frequent thirst at night, including:

1. Xerostamia

Xerostamia is a health problem that causes the sensation of dry mouth and excessive thirst. This condition occurs due to the salivary glands in the mouth not being able to produce enough saliva. In fact, saliva is very important to keep the mouth moist and the balance of bacteria in it.

This disease can be caused by various things. It’s just that this condition occurs more often due to advanced age, consumption of certain drugs, to side effects from radiation therapy which is often done by people with cancer.

2. Diabetes Mellitus

One of the characteristic symptoms of diabetes is the sensation of excessive thirst. This will make you drink more water every day. The problem is, even if you drink a lot, people with diabetes will still feel thirsty.

This condition can occur at any time, be it in the morning, afternoon or evening. The cause is blood sugar levels that have far exceeded normal limits. The body will also try to reduce this blood sugar level by increasing the frequency of urination.

It’s just that, this will also have an impact on disturbing the balance of body fluids which in turn makes you feel thirsty more often.

3. Diabetes Insipidus

Diabetes insipidus is a condition in which the body is no longer able to control body fluids. People with this disease will continue to experience excessive thirst so they can drink up to liters of water every day.

Some sufferers of this disease even drink up to more than 10 liters of water just to overcome the thirst they experience.

4. Anemia

Anemia is a condition when the body doesn’t have enough healthy red blood cells. There are many factors that can cause anemia, including disease, poor diet, or heavy bleeding.

Mild anemia probably won’t cause thirst, but if the condition is severe you may want to drink lots of water. Other symptoms of anemia are dizziness, fatigue and weakness, pale or yellowish skin, and sweating.

5. Hypercalcemia

Hypercalcemia occurs when the level of calcium in the blood is above normal. The causes are overactive parathyroid glands (hyperparathyroidism), other diseases (tuberculosis, sarcoidosis), to cancer (lung, breast, kidney, multiple myeloma).

In addition to feeling thirsty, symptoms of hypercalcemia may include more frequent urination, nausea, vomiting, constipation, bone pain, muscle weakness, brain problems (confusion, fatigue, and depression), and heart problems (arrhythmias and other heart problems).
