Carbohydrates that enter the body will be broken down into glucose (sugar). Now,This sugar substance will later become the main source of energy for the body.

Carbohydrates that are already in the form of sugar will enter the blood. If it is already in the blood, glucose will be sent to all body cells by the hormone insulin. This hormone is produced by the pancreas.

If the amount of sugar is excessive, the body will store the glucose in the liver. This is done so that glucose can be used at a later time.

The amount of blood sugar levels in the body will depend on several things, such as certain medications, diet, and physical activity.

Blood sugar levels that are too high are known as hyperglycemia. If this continues, this condition can lead to diabetes.

For diabetics (diabetics), keeping blood sugar levels normal will help control the disease they suffer.

Meanwhile, blood sugar levels that are too low are known as hypoglycemia. This condition occurs when blood sugar levels are below 70 mg/dL.

What is the Range of Normal Blood Sugar Levels?

According to the American Diabetes Association (ADA) in 2022, blood sugar levels are classified as normal if they are in the following range:

1. People Without Diabetes

Normal blood sugar levels include:

  • Before meals: 99 mg/dL or below.
  • After meals: 140 mg/dL or below.

2. People with Type 1 Diabetes

The ranges of blood sugar levels in people with type 1 diabetes in adults and children are as follows:


  • Before meals: 80-130 mg/dL.
  • After meals (1 or 2 hours after meals): < 180 mg/dL.


  • Before meals: 90-130 mg/dL.
  • Before bed: 90-150 mg/dL.

3. People with Type 2 Diabetes

Normal blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes are as follows:

  • Before meals: 80-130 mg/dL.
  • After meals (1 or 2 hours after meals): < 180 mg/dL.

4. Pregnant Women with Diabetes

For pregnant women, blood sugar levels are said to be normal if they are in the following numbers:

  • Before meals: < 95 mg/dL.
  • After food (1 hour after eating): 140 mg/dL.
  • After food (2 hours after eating): 120 mg/dL.

4. Elderly People (65 Years or Older)

For elderly people, the range of blood sugar levels that belong to the normal range is as follows:

  • Before meals: 80-180 mg/dL.
  • Sick or deteriorating health: 80-200 mg/dL.

1. Maintain Diet

To keep blood sugar at normal levels, make sure the food you eat contains carbohydrates, healthy fats, fiber and protein. Not only the type of food, also pay attention to the portion of the meal and the time of eating.

2. Exercising Routine

One way that can be done so that blood sugar is stable is to exercise regularly. Do it for 20-30 minutes every day.

In addition, choose the type of exercise that you like to help you be more motivated to do it.

3. Stop Bad Habits

Some bad habits can affect blood sugar levels, even making it difficult to control. Examples of these bad habits, namely smoking and consumption of alcoholic beverages.
