Is Breakfast Milk Safe for Diabetics?

Milk is rich in calcium and other nutrients that can affect the health condition of diabetic patients. However, not a few diabetics are hesitant to consume milk because they are worried that it can raise blood sugar levels. So, can milk be drunk as breakfast for diabetic patients? Even though diabetics have to be good at choosing the food and drink they consume, that doesn’t mean they can’t drink milk. Milk can still be drunk by diabetics, as long as it is done in the right way and at the right time, for example at breakfast.

The results of the study, published in the Journal of Dairy Science, show that breakfast with cow’s milk can help keep glucose or blood sugar levels under control. In addition, milk can provide a longer feeling of fullness so that diabetics can eat lunch in smaller portions.

People with diabetes tend to have low bone density. This condition is related to the body’s inability to produce insulin. Diabetic patients generally have impaired vision and nerve damage which increases the risk of falls and fractures.

In type 2 diabetes patients, lifestyle can also interfere with bone health. Therefore, consuming milk that contains high calcium is necessary to keep the bones strong.

Sugar Content In Milk

Besides being high in calcium, milk is also rich in protein, fat and carbohydrates. The carbohydrates found in milk are called lactose.

In the body, lactose is converted to glucose or galactose. However, the process of converting lactose into glucose takes longer.

Milk has a low index, around 39. Therefore, breakfast of milk for diabetics is not at risk of causing a significant increase in blood sugar levels.

However, in milk there are at least 12 grams of carbohydrates which are equivalent to the carbohydrate needs of one meal. Therefore, diabetics should still manage their daily milk intake so that blood sugar remains under control.

Most of the fat in milk is classified as unhealthy fat. Therefore, diabetics should be more selective in choosing the type of milk, for example low-fat milk, skim milk, or soy milk which is free of flavor or sugar content at all.
