How Urine Therapy Works

Urine is a liquid and waste product that is not needed by the body. The human kidney works as a filter that will remove excess water and waste cell activity from the blood vessels.

This waste will be taken to the bladder as urine. Around 91 to 96 percent of urine consists of water and the rest is salt, ammonia, and waste from the body’s metabolic processes.

Urine therapy is done by drinking a glass of own urine every morning or putting urine on certain parts of the skin.

This therapy is carried out because urine is believed to have been used as a medicine to treat various health conditions such as: asthma, arthritis, allergies, cancer, digestive problems, migraines, and fertility problems.

Myths About Urine Therapy

Urine therapy treatment method is believed to treat various diseases. Here are some examples of myths about the benefits of urine therapy, including:

1. Can Prevent Infection

Drinking urine first thing in the morning is believed to prevent infection and boost immunity.

In fact, urine contains a variety of harmful bacteria. If a person’s immune system is not good, then the risk of bacterial infection will actually increase.

2. Able to Make Teeth Whiter

The ancient Romans were known to use urine to whiten their teeth, believing that the ammonia in it could act as a bleaching agent.

Under certain conditions, urine can contain ammonia. However, it is known that this ammonia appears when the body is dehydrated, there are kidney stones, and there is a urinary tract infection. Of course this is not a good condition.

If there is an infection in the urinary tract, the urine will contain bacteria. Rubbing urine contaminated with bacteria on the teeth and gums will only increase the risk of infection in the mouth area.

3. Helps Treat Skin Problems

People in ancient times believed that urine could treat skin problems such as acne.

This benefit is due to the content of urea in urine. Urea is formed as a by-product of protein breakdown. Urea is indeed used to treat dry skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis.

However, if you want to treat skin problems with urea, you should use synthetic urea, which is widely available in skin care products. Rubbing urine on the skin is of course less effective due to the concentration of urea in urine tends to be small.

4. Prevents the Growth of Cancer Cells

The urine of cancer patients is believed to contain tumor antigens. When drinking urine containing tumor antigens, it is hoped that the body will produce natural antigens so that the growth of cancer cells can be prevented.

In fact, this research was done on camel urine. Further research is needed to prove these benefits.

5. Helps Treat Jellyfish Stings

You may have heard that applying urine to the area where you have been stung by a jellyfish can reduce pain.

However, urine also contains a sodium component that will make the wound from a sting more painful. When stung by a jellyfish, you should apply a special ointment.

The Dangers of Doing Urine Therapy

Drinking urine can cause several health problems, including:

1. Infection

A study involving 100 young children found that there are various bacteria in the urine. Some of the bacteria that were found, among others:

  • Salmonella.
  • Pseudomonas.
  • Shigella.
  • Escherichia coli.
  • Staphylococcus.

When people who have a weak immune system consume urine, the risk of getting an infection will also increase.

2. Dehydration

Urine contains significant amounts of salt and its concentration increases when you are dehydrated.

Salt consumption is associated with increased thirst. The higher the sodium in the body, the more thirsty you will feel.

Consumption of urine that contains high amounts of salt can make you even more thirsty.

3. Is Poisonous

Urinary system or urinary tract work to remove toxins in the body. When there are harmful substances in the body, the kidneys will filter them and excrete them through urine.

Drinking urine means that you are drinking toxic substances that the body wants to get rid of. This will trigger kidney damage because this organ has to work harder due to the higher concentration of toxins.

4. Interfere with the work of the drug

Many drug residues are excreted in the urine when the body has finished processing them. If you consume urine that contains drugs, that means you are the same as taking these drugs into the body.

Moment You take the same medicine, then that means the amount of medicine will be more than prescribed. This condition will cause a bad reaction in the body.

In the end, if you want to benefit from certain ingredients in urine, you should choose other alternatives, for example using synthetic urea which is found in many skin care products.
