When consuming foods that contain high carbohydrates, the body will experience an increase in blood sugar. This can happen because the body will break down carbohydrates into simpler sugars and then enter the blood circulation system.

However, when it comes to how many carbohydrates a person with diabetes can consume, there is no definite answer. Each individual requires a different amount of carbohydrates.

Meanwhile, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) suggests that the consumption of carbohydrates for people with diabetes should be able to meet 45 percent of daily calorie needs

However, a study states that people with diabetes can get good benefits when consuming fewer carbohydrates, which is a maximum of 26 percent of daily calorie needs.

That is, if you need 2,000 to 2,200 calories per day, then you may consume 130 to 143 grams of carbohydrates per day.

Reducing carbohydrate consumption can help you to maintain blood sugar within a normal range.

Determining the Right Carbohydrate Intake for Diabetics

Basically every food contains carbohydrates. Here’s how to calculate it:

  1. Learn the types of foods that contain carbohydrates.
  2. Find out the amount of carbohydrates in the food to be consumed.
  3. You can calculate the total carbohydrates consumed at each meal.

You can try reducing your carbohydrate consumption to 10, 15, or 25 grams at each meal.

When the body feels uncomfortable, adjustments can be made by adding or subtracting it until you get the right dose. In addition, you are also advised to consume fewer carbohydrates at dinner.

You need to take blood sugar measurements before and after meals (one to two hours). To prevent damage to blood vessels and nerves, you need to maintain a maximum blood sugar of 180 mg/dL two hours after eating.

In general, the fewer carbohydrates you eat, the lower your blood sugar will spike.
