The research also revealed, people with problems with teeth or missing a lot of teeth (toothless), have a higher risk of experiencing problems with blood sugar.
That is why good oral and dental hygiene is considered to be associated with a reduced risk of diabetes. One of the common actions taken to achieve oral hygiene is brushing the teeth.
However, the reasons for the assumption that toothbrushes can prevent diabetes are not known with certainty. The researchers only concluded that there are several possibilities why poor dental hygiene can cause diabetes.

The researchers found that participants who had gum disease were 9 percent more likely to develop diabetes. Meanwhile, participants who lost teeth (up to 15 teeth) had a 21 percent higher risk.
On the other hand, good oral health is associated with a reduced risk of diabetes. According to the study, people who diligently brush their teeth three times or more a day have an 8 percent lower risk of developing diabetes.
Tips for Maintaining Dental and Oral Health
One way to prevent diabetes is to keep your teeth and mouth clean. Therefore, start to pay attention to the health of the oral cavity so that blood sugar levels are always maintained.

- Brush your teeth three times a day, after every meal and before going to bed.
- Use toothpaste that contains fluoride.
- Do flossing at least once a day.
