Can Diabetics Drink Milk?

1. Low Sugar Milk

Drinking milk with a high sugar content too often can exacerbate the condition because it can increase blood sugar levels and insulin resistance. Therefore, choose low-sugar milk. Types of milk that are low in sugar include almond milk, camel milk, or soy milk.

2. Low Fat Milk

Cows that eat grass directly on pasture are known to produce low-fat milk. Goat milk is also low in fat, which has 11 grams of carbohydrates and 8 grams of protein per cup.

3. Milk Containing Fatty Acids

Organic cow’s milk is one of the milks with good fatty acid content, because it is given animal feed or grass which is free from chemical fertilizers and pesticides. Milk for diabetes is also free of growth hormones and antibiotics.

4. High Protein Milk

The protein content in milk has been shown to help control blood sugar levels after eating. That way, high-protein milk is beneficial for diabetics. Types of milk with a high protein content come from plant sources, including almond, soy, oat, quinoa, and macadamia.

5. Fermented Milk

This type of fermented milk is considered good for diabetics. Probiotic bacteria in fermented milk products such as yogurt have been shown to improve blood lipid profiles and antioxidant status in people with type 2 diabetes.

Portions of Milk for Diabetics

A study published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition advises diabetics to consume between 2-3 servings of dairy products every day.
