Effects of Drinking Soda Too Often for Health

Although soda drinks can provide a refreshing effect, consuming them too often can cause negative impact on health, one of which increases the risk of cancer. This is presumably due to the high sugar content in it.

Excessive sugar consumption is known to cause overweight, aka obesity, which is a trigger for a high risk of cancer. In fact, eating it once a day can increase your risk of certain cancers, regardless of your weight.

A study by Cancer Council Victoria and University of Melbourne analyzed over 35,000 people over twelve years who developed thousands of cases of cancer related to being overweight.

Overweight people who regularly consume soft drinks have a higher risk of developing cancer. This is due to the high sugar content in soft drinks. In one bottle of cola (340 grams) contains 39 grams of carbohydrates; all of which come from added sugar.

Meanwhile, according to a study published in the journal PLOS Medicine, the sweet taste used in soft drinks is an artificial sweetener such as aspartame which can increase the risk of certain cancers,

Types of Cancer That Can Be Caused by Soft Drinks

Here are some types of cancer that can be triggered by drinking soda, including:

1. Gallbladder Cancer

Someone who consuming lots of soft drinks and various other sweet drinks has a much greater risk of developing gallbladder cancer.

People who consume too many soft drinks or sugary drinks every day have twice the risk of developing tumors in the gallbladder, and are at higher risk of developing bile duct cancer.

2. Pancreatic Cancer

People who consumed two or more sodas a week had a significantly increased risk of pancreatic cancer, compared to people who did not consume these soft drinks.

The sugar content in soft drinks is believed to increase insulin levels in the body, thus encouraging the growth of pancreatic cancer cells. It is this increase in insulin that may lead to the development of cancer.

3. Colon Cancer

According to research, every 226 grams of sugary drinks consumed per day can increase the risk of 16 percent higher colon cancer. As previously explained, soft drinks are high in sugar content.

The researchers also found that the effect was especially significant among teens who consumed sugary drinks.

Each daily serving of sugar-sweetened beverages consumed between the ages of 13-18 years was associated with a 32 percent higher risk of developing colon cancer early on.

4. Liver Cancer

Research found that women who consumed at least one sugary drink per day were 73% more likely to develop liver cancer than women who consumed three or fewer sugary drinks a month.

Tips for Safely Consuming Soft Drinks

Even though it can increase the risk of certain cancers, you can still consume soft drinks as long as you limit the portions and not too often.

If you want to consume soda, limit your daily sugar intake, both from food and drinks. We recommend that daily sugar intake does not exceed 50 milligrams.

Remember, don’t consume too much or often drink soft drinks if you don’t want to be at risk of developing cancer. It would be nice, multiply the consumption of drinking water, fruits and vegetables, and exercise diligently.
