When you prepare food by frying it, it becomes dry, crunchy and golden brown.

Not only does it give a new taste and texture, but frying food also causes changes in the nutritional content. This also causes health problems.

Some of the health effects that can arise due to consumption of oily foods, including:

1. Increases the Risk of Heart Disease and Stroke

Greasy foods contain high amounts of saturated and trans fats. When it enters the body, this type of fat will increase the amount of cholesterol in the blood and damage the artery walls.

Damaged areas in the blood vessels will cause plaque, narrowing of the arteries, and making the process of pumping blood more difficult. This condition is also known as atherosclerosis.

Plaque can also form in the blood vessels that carry blood to the brain, increasing the risk of stroke. When the blood supply to the brain is obstructed, the brain can be damaged due to a lack of oxygen and nutrients.

A 2021 study combining 19 studies found an association between consumption of oily foods and an increased risk of coronary heart disease, heart attack, heart failure and stroke.

2. Increase the Risk of Diabetes

People who consume too much fried food can have a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Research conducted by Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) And National University of Singapore revealed, someone who consumes fried food at least once a week has a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Oily foods can contribute to weight gain. Fat accumulation in the body can cause prolonged inflammation which results in insulin resistance.

Insulin resistance is closely related to type 2 diabetes mellitus.

3. Increases the Risk of Obesity

Greasy foods contain more calories than non-fried foods, so consuming large amounts of them can significantly increase your calorie intake.

As an illustration, 1 gram of fat can contribute 9 calories to the body.

In addition, trans fats in oily foods are known to have a significant role in weight gain, because they can affect hormones that regulate appetite and fat storage.

When consumed in excess, it’s no wonder that oily foods can increase the risk of obesity.

4. Causes Problems in the Digestive System

Excessive consumption of oil can put pressure on the digestive system. Oil contains fat which is more difficult to digest than other nutrients.

Therefore, greasy foods can cause diarrhea or food stays in the digestive system too long so you can feel full and bloated.

Consumption of oily food can also trigger symptoms to appear in patients who have problems with the digestive system, such as chronic pancreatitis, vomiting, or irritable bowel syndrome. After consuming fried foods, these patients may experience diarrhea, abdominal pain, vomiting, and cramps.

5. Disrupt the balance of bacteria in the gut

The food consumed will affect the balance of bacteria in the gut. In the human intestine, good bacteria grow which have a duty to help the body function and immunity.

Oily foods are difficult to digest and can encourage the growth of bad gut bacteria. This condition will certainly change the balance of bacteria in digestion in general.

This imbalance can have an effect on overall health, such as affecting immunity, fiber digestion, body weight, heart health, and digestive health.

6. Triggers Acne Growth

As previously mentioned, consumption of oily food can disrupt the balance of hormones in the body. This hormone disorder can be one of the triggers for the appearance of acne on the face.

In addition, oil in food can also stimulate the work of the oil glands, resulting in excess oil production. When excess oil closes the skin pores, the risk of acne will also increase.

Oily foods also often contain flour or sugar. This flour and sugar can exacerbate inflammation in the body, so it will be more difficult for acne to heal, and may even get worse.

7. Increases Cancer Risk

When foods high in carbohydrates are fried at high temperatures, acrylamide compounds are formed.

Acrylamide compounds are known to have carcinogenic properties in rats and have the potential to have the same effect on humans.

Consuming too much oily food can also increase the risk of type 2 diabetes and obesity. This condition can increase inflammation and oxidative stress, so that the risk of cancer will increase.

A study published in the journal Frontiers in Nutrition in 2022 stated that there is a positive relationship between fried food consumption and cancer risk, including stomach cancer, prostate cancer, throat and vocal cord cancer, and gallbladder cancer.

8. Contributes to Impaired Brain Function

Excessive consumption of oily food has a risk of impaired brain function. People who consume a lot of fried and highly processed foods tend to have low scores on their thinking abilities.

One of the causes of this condition is the fat content in fried foods. Trans fat and saturated fat cause inflammation, which can damage blood vessels to the brain. When the blood supply is disrupted, there is a disruption in brain structure, tissue, and activity.

These effects may not appear for a short time. However, excessive consumption of oily foods can increase the risk.

Therefore, you need to limit oily foods. Instead you can consume healthy foods that are low in fat and full of nutrition.
