Various Causes of Weakness and Lack of Energy

While it’s common to feel lethargic when you’re doing a lot of activity or don’t get enough sleep, in some cases it’s a symptom of a medical problem.

The following are various causes of weakness in the body that should not be underestimated, including:

1. Diabetes

A sluggish body and lack of energy that makes you tend to be sleepy can be a sign of diabetes. This is because diabetes can make it difficult for the body to process blood sugar into energy due to not producing enough insulin.

That way, without a source of energy, the body will easily experience weakness all day.

If you often experience fatigue, especially to the point that it makes you very sleepy and you want to sleep in the hours before lunch, you should immediately check your blood sugar condition. This is to determine whether the cause is diabetes or not.

2. Anemia

Another health problem that can cause symptoms of weakness and lethargy throughout the day is anemia. This condition, which is commonly referred to as a lack of blood, is actually a condition in which the body lacks red blood cells.

Some of the symptoms of anemia are weak body, tired easily, sleepy all day, pale face, and decreased concentration.

3. Hypothyroidism

Hypothyroidism is a disease that occurs when the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone. Thyroid disease is more common in women.

Thyroid hormone controls metabolism so when levels are low, the body may experience symptoms of fatigue, weight gain, and feeling cold.

4. Disorders of the Heart

A lethargic and weak body all day could be a sign of heart problems. This is because heart disease—especially heart failure—can cause the body to feel tired all day and usually unable to exercise for long periods of time.

In heart failure, the condition of the heart becomes less effective at pumping oxygenated blood to the muscles and other tissues in the body. Even everyday activities become difficult, such as walking or carrying heavy objects.

Other possible symptoms of heart disease include chest pain, palpitations, dizziness, fainting and shortness of breath.

5. Hepatitis

Hepatitis is inflammation of the liver caused by several possibilities, ranging from infection to obesity.

The liver has many important functions in the body from breaking down toxins to making proteins to control blood clotting to metabolizing and storing carbohydrates. When the liver becomes inflamed, this important process can stop.

Apart from feeling tired, some of the symptoms of hepatitis that may occur include jaundice, abdominal pain, nausea, dark yellow urine, and light-colored stools.

6. Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) or also known as chronic fatigue syndrome is a disorder characterized by intense fatigue. This condition will not improve with rest and can get worse after physical activity or having a mental disorder. It is not yet known what is the exact cause of this condition.

Apart from debilitating fatigue, some of the other symptoms that confirm chronic fatigue syndrome include:

  • Decreased short-term memory or concentration.
  • Muscle and joint pain.
  • Headache.
  • Lymph node pain.
  • Frequent sore throats.

7. Drugs

Some medications can cause a lack of energy or a feeling of aloofness. Some people may be more sensitive to the effects of certain drugs. If you experience these side effects after taking the drug, consulting a doctor is necessary.

Some side effects are temporary, while in other cases the doctor may lower the dose or suggest a drug change. Some of these medications include antibiotics, antidepressants, antihistamines, and antipsychotics

8. Menopause

If you are going through menopause you may find it difficult to get a good night’s sleep. This condition makes a lot of hormonal changes that make women sweat at night and hot flashes (sudden warm sensation). This can keep you awake at night and make you tired during the day.

9. Depression

Psychological health disorders can also make the body feel weak and lethargic all day long.

If you experience depression due to various life problems, you will likely experience symptoms such as being lazy to get out of bed, sleep disturbances, feeling excessive sadness, and increasing suicidal ideation.

If this condition is left unchecked, it will not only make mental health problems worse, but will also trigger inflammation and other health problems that are far more serious.

10. Sleep Apnea

11. Obesity
